NBA's PJ Brown Thinks Zink!
Zink was delighted to be included in the Black History Month celebration at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans. PJ Brown did a fantastic job reading the story of Zink the Zebra to area school children in front of the zebra exhibit. Towering over the children and adults at 6 feet 11 inches, he shared about the times when he felt like a zebra with spots instead of stripes. He explained how he felt growing up and being teased by his classmates for being so much taller than they were. He strongly encouraged the children to think before they say cruel hurtful words to others and reinforced, just as the book says, “Being Different…Does Make You Special!”
Mr. Brown has received numerous community awards for his commitment to young people. It is quite obvious that he loves children and has a great passion for the NBA’s Read to Achieve program. The NBA’s Read to Achieve program is a year-round campaign to help young people develop a life-long love for reading and encourage adults to read regularly to children. Reaching an estimated 50 million children a year, Read to Achieve is the most extensive educational outreach initiative in the history of professional sports. In addition to being supported by all 29 NBA teams, 16 WNBA teams, the eight teams that make up the NBA's new minor league, the National Basketball Development League (NBDL), Read to Achieve is supported by the NBA's officials, parents and wives of players organizations, and the NBA Players Association and Retired Players Association.
