Brownie The Zink the Zebra Patch Activity for Brownie Girl Scouts
Zink's Patch Activity is more than a great plan for a Brownie troop meeting. It is also an excellent opportunity to help girls learn to appreciate individual differences and foster compassion and respect for others.
The Zink Patch Activity has the #1 qualification for a good troop activity: IT'S FUN!
The girls in the troop will:
-
Read the book Zink the Zebra together, and enjoy its endearing illustrations.
-
Create their own stories around Zink and the theme of appreciating individual differences.
-
Receive their own plush Zink bean-bag toy, and create a special name for it.
-
Enjoy snacks that get girls thinking about respecting others.
-
Talk about Kelly, and their own feelings about cancer and being different.
-
Decide on and do an optional service project.
-
Upon completion receive an attractive Zink the Zebra patch.
Due to the magnitude of the program, only councils can order Girl Scout materials directly through Zink the Zebra.
The activity centers around the story of Zink the Zebra, along with the story of Kelly Weil, the story's 11-year-old author who created the tale as part of her struggle with cancer.
Cancer is touched upon in the Zink program because it is an equal opportunity disease. It strikes without respect to race, creed or gender.
The stigma of this disease...which touches the lives of almost every girl's family...is used as a means to show how being different can be uncomfortable for all of us. It encourages positive interaction, to help girls grow into compassionate, respectful, kind girls and women of the future.
Sound interesting? If your troop isn't scheduled to enjoy this fulfilling activity, here's how to get the ball rolling!
